Jake and Kayla’s Maui proposal portrait session at Ironwoods Beach was—how do we put this?—utterly charming in the most “we-don’t-even-like-photos” kind of way. And yet, somehow, it turned out to be one of the most heartwarming, genuine, and joyfully sweet evenings we’ve had the honor of photographing.
Now, Jake had one specific request: the classic shot—him down on one knee, Kayla looking adorably stunned and maybe halfway to bolting in disbelief. And folks, it delivered. Maui, with all its wild cliffs and sea breezes, knows how to show up for a moment like this.
He didn’t want anything too elaborate. No elaborate flower arches. No flash mobs. Just the two of them, the ocean, and a simple plan. Jake thought that he could book a couple’s portrait so Kayla could be prepared and look her best. (That dress!) And if we’re being totally honest, that’s one of the best suggestions we give to a partner planning to propose. So Jake got down on one knee with the waves crashing behind him, and she had no clue. Her reaction? A perfect mix of surprise, joy, and possibly, “Wait, is this actually happening?” It was, in fact, happening. And she said yes!
Maui has this way of cradling moments like this in its hands, private enough for intimacy, stunning enough for jaw-dropping portraits, and always with a sprinkle of island magic. Ironwoods Beach, with its dramatic cliffs and endless ocean, is one of our favorite hidden gems for exactly this reason. You get beauty and serenity, minus the crowds.
Jake and Kayla laughed, kissed, and embraced their picture-perfect “we’re engaged!” moment. They may not be photo people, but this little chapter? Pure magic, captured. We know they will treasure these! And if that wasn’t romantic enough, Jake topped it off with red roses. Of course, he did!
Congrats, you two. May your adventures be simple, genuine, and always full of joy!

The Ingersolls’ Big Island family portrait session was the kind that makes you realize how important it is to be present in the moment. Their one simple wish? Capture the kids. Not the posed, perfectly-polished kind of photo. But the real kind. The kind where the wind is playing tag with their hair, their toes
