There are moments in life that feel like déjà vu—not in the eerie, time-loop way, but in the heart-fluttering, oh-my-gosh-we’re-really-here-again kind of way. That was exactly the vibe when the Mainaga stepped onto Po’olenalena Beach, barefoot and giddy, ready to recreate a piece of their history with a Maui family portrait.
Five years ago, it was just the two of them, Han An and William—starry-eyed, hopelessly in love, and posing for their engagement photos with Karma Hill Photography. Fast forward to now, and here they were again, except this time, they had a tiny, utterly adorable third wheel: their daughter, Moon!
Sweetest Moments
Moon, all two years of energy and curiosity bundled into a toddler-sized frame, had never been to Maui before. William—born and raised in Kihei—was practically vibrating with excitement at the thought of showing her his home. Han An was equally eager to watch her tiny footprints trail next to theirs in the sand, to hear her giggle as the waves chased her toes, and to soak in every moment of their first Maui adventure as a family of three!
And let’s be honest—family portraits with a toddler are a mix of magic and mayhem. There were tickle fights, sandy fingers, and at least one instance of Moon attempting to make a break for the ocean mid-shot. But that’s the best part of us— they’re silly, fun, and endlessly in love with the life they’ve built together. It was deeply meaningful to be in a place they hold so dear…
As the sun melted into the horizon, Moon nestled between them, and was the perfect ending to their first family portrait. A new chapter, the same beach, and the same love—just with even more joy to capture. And maybe, just maybe, a future family of four next time!
