Some sessions are planned down to the minute. Others are about trust, in the process, the place, and the magic that shows up when you least expect it. The Nehren family’s Oahu family portrait session at Waimanalo Beach was a perfect example of why we don’t cancel or reschedule too far in advance. The weather had been rainy all week, and even the morning of the session felt questionable at best. But we decided to go for it anyway. And honestly, it turned into something truly special!
The skies weren’t bright blue. They were moody, soft, and layered with clouds that made the landscape feel cinematic and dramatic. And in our opinion? Absolutely epic. The natural Hawaiian beauty of Waimanalo still showed up in full force: turquoise water, lush green mountains, and that raw, untouched feeling that makes this stretch of Oahu so unforgettable. It was the kids’ first time in Hawaii, and you could feel the excitement buzzing through every moment, rain or not!

What made the session work so beautifully was the Nehren family themselves. They didn’t let the weather bother them for a second. They laughed, leaned into the adventure, and treated the whole experience like part of the story. And it shows in the way they smiled through the wind, the way they stayed close, and the way their joy never dimmed, even when the rain finally decided to make a dramatic entrance during the last fifteen minutes. By then, we already had plenty, and honestly, the rain just added character!

Our style of photography is all about embracing what’s real: movement, connection, and moments that can’t be staged. The Nehren family did exactly that, and the result is a gallery full of heart, adventure, and honest beauty. Proof that sometimes, the most memorable moments happen under cloudy skies!
