Some family sessions feel like a celebration of right now. And the Bentjen family’s Oahu family portrait at Waialae Beach was exactly that. Visiting Hawaii for the very first time, they arrived with sunshine in their spirits and 24 years of marriage worth celebrating. Brad and his wife, Melinda, have built something steady and joyful, and it shows most clearly in their four incredible kids: Easton (24), Sam (21), Ellie (19), and Evan (16).
This family genuinely loves being together. They travel together, play sports together, and watch sports together. And if Nebraska Husker Basketball is on, you can safely assume they’re cheering loudly. Their faith runs deep, too, rooted in gratitude which made Waialae Beach feel like the perfect place to pause and take it all in.

The session flowed effortlessly. We captured all the combinations:the full family, siblings together, parents with each child, and moments that felt completely unplanned but perfectly right. There was laughter, easy teasing, and the kind of comfort that only comes from years of shared history. Sam and Ellie, both attending the University of Nebraska, brought a sense of independence mixed with nostalgia, while Easton’s confidence and Evan’s youthful energy rounded everything out beautifully.
What made this session so special wasn’t just the portraits; it was the joy behind them. The Bentjens showed up ready to enjoy every second, and it shows in every image. Their smiles were genuine, their connection undeniable, and the love between them unmistakable.

Waialae’s soft light and open shoreline gave everything room to breathe, letting moments unfold naturally. By the end, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like a memory in the making, one that captures not just how this family looks, but who they are. A truly lovely session, full of heart, laughter, and togetherness.

David had been rehearsing this moment, a Maui proposal portrait, in his head for weeks… the words, the timing, the way he’d lead Maria across the sand as if they were simply taking a sunset stroll. But nothing could have prepared him for how perfect it all became at Southside Beach. The soft Maui light
